Macondray
Macondray is a bar and restaurant that blends California style with New England charm both in design and menu concept. Both owners, originally from Maine wanted a space that could offer cocktails with fresh ingredients and food that reminded them of home i.e. the lobster roll, pier fries and fresh oysters. This, and the neighborhood set the precedence for the interior.
A serene walking path located a few blocks away from the restaurant called Macondray Lane is where we pulled lots of inspiration from including the name. It takes you out of the hustle and bustle of the city while you walk through the lush green plants located on the backside of the century old Victorian homes. We wanted to bring that calming feeling into the space through color palette and design details.
Traditional wainscotting done in contemporary way line the walls while painted fresh white with a custom green “concrete block” wallpaper above. Bronze ornate tin tiles flank the 17’ high ceiling and rusted metal shelving accent the space and created a place for our plants to flourish and drip down above the tables.
A mix of deep blue leather and green velvet barstools make up the seating combined with tobacco vegan leather banquettes tying the overall palette together. A vibrant parrot wallpaper line the back hallway leading you to the hand painted restrooms by Marissa and her creative painting team as well as the Parrot’s Nest, our upstairs private party room.
All in all, we married the two coasts and brought a truly unique design to Russian Hill that has become a neighborhood staple.
